FOUNDERS' DAY 2003
Upstate Alphas celebrate Founders' Day at Shady Oak Baptist Church

GREENVILLE, SC: The Gamma Gamma Lambda Chapter hosted Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity's Founders' Day Observance and Celebration at Shady Oak Baptist Church in Greenville SC. Members from Rho Delta Lambda Chapter (Anderson, SC) and Pi Alpha Chapter (Clemson University) were in attendance along with their family and friends.

Bro. Don Weston spoke on the occasion and how on "a cold, cold, cold night" more than 97 years ago, seven men started Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity at Cornell University. Bro. Anthony Dawson presented the Greek Medley to the other seven member organizations of the National PanHellenic Council, and candles were lit as a brief history of those organizations was read. Bro. Bobby Clark gave some special presentations and closing comments saying Religion is one of Alpha's fundamentals - "it is not a coincidence that we choose to celebrate our Founders' day in a house of worship."

The keynote message was given by the Rev. Dr. Ronald Barton, who spoke about when Jesus cured the paralytic at Capernaum (Mark 2:1-12). Rev. Barton, initiated into Alpha at Morris Brown College in 1983, discussed the true meaning of brotherhood, and that with an abiding faith in God all things are possible. "Can you help a brother out?" and, "Focus on the solution and the Solution is Jesus" he preached to the 150 members and 50 brothers and their families gathered in the church's sanctuary. After the program, thirty brothers and their family members gathered at Holiday Inn (off I-85) for a Fellowship Meal.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., is the nation's first African-American Greek-letter fraternity established by college students. Established on December 4, 1906 on the campus of Cornell University, Alpha Phi Alpha has more than 750 chapters worldwide with over 125,000 members. Gamma Gamma Lambda Chapter is the Greenville chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha established in 1941.
