Greenville, SC: The first
Annual Upstate Black Family Reunion was recently held at Lakeside
Park on August 7, 2004. The event was co-sponsored by local radio
station 107.3 WJMZ and the Allen Temple Community Center. The
event drew an estimated 5,000 people to the park where many of
them enjoyed the softball, basketball, and flag football managed
by Gamma Gamma Lambda and Pi Alpha (Clemson) chapters of Alpha
Phi Alpha Fraternity
According to Bro. Rudy Simmons, the Event Coordinator for the
chapter, "just our presence was larger than life. There
was an overwhelming impact we had on children, youth, adults,
the elderly, and families alike. They will remember us and what
our Greek letters symbolize for years to come and beyond. Gamma
Gamma Lambda is excited about playing an even more pivotal role
next year so that the Family Reunion can reach an even higher
level of success."
Several booths were sponsored by organizations, churches, and
community groups including Urban League’s Voter Education
Booth. “We are excited about next year and working with
Alphas to carry the event to a higher level,” says Tony
Fields, Operations Director for WJMZ, and creator of the event.
