Greenville, SC: Gamma Gamma Lambda Chapter is announcing a new Mentoring and Leadership Development Program called, The Sons of Alpha. This program stems from the recent Project Alpha workshop from this past October that drew nearly 100 young men from across the Upstate. "The chapter is seeking a way to continue that enthusiasm by maintaining a more constant and consistent relationship with youth in Greenville", said Don Weston, project coordinator. The purpose of this program is to aid in the academic, leadership, social, and cultural development of young African American males who are currently in 7th through 10th grades and reside in Greenville County. This program will serve as the focal point for many of the chapter's national programs and special projects i.e., Project Alpha, Go-to-High School, Go-to-College, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. The chapter is accepting applications for the spring term through [December 16, 2002]. The Sons of Alpha application form along with the program's action plans and strategy are available on the chapter's website at www.gglapa.org. The spring term will start in January and last until May 2003. The chapter hopes to then expand the program into a yearlong process. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is the nation's first African American Greek-letter fraternity established by college students. Established on December 4, 1906 on the campus of Cornell University, Alpha Phi Alpha has more than 750 chapters worldwide with over 100,000 members.
