2008 Southern Regional Convention:
GGL and SC win Regional Awards
SC Alpha takes home six regional awards

Jacksonville, FL - More than 1000 brothers from across the region gathered at the 77th annual Southern Regional convention held on April 3 thru April 6. The SC District won a total of six regional awards. Gamma Gamma Lambda and Pi Alpha Chapters won the Charles H. Wesley Award for collaboration between graduate and college chapters. Brothers from SC won the Charles Greene Merit Award (K. N'Gai Gaithers ), Gus A. Witherspoon Leadership Award (Vince Gatlin), the highest Chapter GPA in the Region (Delta Alpha, Claflin University 3.64), Miss Congeniality (Danyell Flowers, Theta Nu , University of South Carolina ) and College Brother of the Year (Matthew McClellan, Tau Eta, College of Charleston).

The GA district won five awards starting with the highest GPA Brother in the Region (4.0, Anthony Roberts, Alpha Rho, Morehouse, Atlanta), the Belford V. Lawson Oratorical Contest winner (Kenneth Wright, Zeta Mu, GA State, Atlanta), College Chapter of Year (Alpha Rho, Morehouse), Scholar's Bowl Competition (Alpha Phi, Clark-Atlanta Univ., Atlanta) and Step show Competition winner (Alpha Phi, Clark-Atlanta Univ., Atlanta).

The FL District won four awards. Ms. Mandy John (Xi Iota, Univ. of Central Florida) was crowned the 2008-2009 Southern Region Miss Black & Gold, as well as the winner of the talent award. Alumni Chapter of the Year went to Beta Beta Lambda (Miami, FL). Bro. Phillip Agnew (Beta Nu , Florida A&M Univ. ) was the 1st runner-up for the Oratorical Contest.

Also in other convention news, Tristen J. Allen (Alpha Rho, Morehouse College) was elected as a new Assistant Regional Vice President. The convention featured receptions for Darryl A. Peal and Herman "Skip" Mason who are running for 33rd General President.

Friday's Public Program talked about the nation's Education System and what it will take to improve this system, as well as took a moment of silence for the 40th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s Assignation in Memphis, TN. Bro. Mark Dawson submitted the chapter's donation of $500 to MLK Memorial Fund. The next regional convention will be held in Atlanta, GA.
