PROJECT ALPHA 2001
Local Alpha Brothers teach young teen boys about sexual responsibility

SPARTANBURG, SC: Alpha Phi Alpha brothers from Spartanburg and Greenville will join forces this Saturday at Whitlock Junior High School to teach teen boys about their sexual responsibilities as young men.

Project Alpha has been a cornerstone in the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity for more than 20 years and all 700 chapters across the nation will conduct Project Alpha activities in their communities during Oct. 6 through 14. That week has been designated as Project Alpha Week.

Locally, Spartanburg and Greenville alumni chapters along with Clemson University's undergraduate chapter will conduct the local Project Alpha 2001 event from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Whitlock Junior High.

More than 60 teens from Spartanburg, Greenville, Anderson and Union counties will participate in the event.

The event will include workshops presented by fraternity members and also fun acting and Step Clinic activities for the youth. The acting portion will be presented by the group, "Imagine That" and the step portion will be conducted by Clemson University Alpha brothers.

"As we know it, most teen pregnancy prevention programs are aimed toward females," said S.C. District Project Alpha Chairman Lewis C. Hicks. "Our program is specifically taught from the male perspective for males," he said.

Hicks, based in Columbia, is a member of the local Xi Theta Lambda Chapter of A Phi A. He is coordinating the local event with local chapters.

"We teach abstinence, but if young males choose to make a decision to be sexually involved, then we want them to have the skills to protect themselves," Hicks said.

Alpha Phi Alpha is the oldest Black Greek-lettered organization forming in 1906 at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. The fraternity's motto is "Manly Deeds, Scholarship and Love for All Mankind." Project Alpha is part of the fraternity's national program.

Next year, the Spartanburg Chapter will celebrate its 20 year anniversary.
